Here we have to go back to the year 1300, and to draw a line, roughly speaking, between Grodno and Zamosc, afterwards lengthening it in a South-West direction on to the Hungarian border. To the West of this line dwelt the Poles, who had been centuries earlier converted from heathenism by Rome. To the East of this line dwelt the White and Red Russians, who, in common with their countrymen at Moscow, were the spiritual offspring of the Greek patriarch at Constantinople, and claimed the name of Orthodox. To the North of Grodno dwelt the Lithuanians, a race of valiant Pagans, the most interesting of all Europeans in the eyes of a philologer.
